Chronic periodontitis linked to tongue cancer 7/13/2007 12:04 PM
In a small case-control study, chronic periodontitis was associated with an elevated risk of tongue cancer, independent of smoking status and other potential risk factors.
"We expected to see an association, given the results of earlier studies linking chronic infections and inflammation to cancer risk in other organs," lead author Dr. Mine Terzal, from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in New York, said in a statement. However, "we didn't expect to see such a clear association with a relatively small sample size."

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In women with diabetes, abnormal sleeping patterns and sleep-disordered breathing appear to partially mediate their increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to analysis of data from the Nurses' Health Study.
